Berry Lamp
While I lived in Singapore I travelled all around Asia. During these travels, I was fascinated by local traditions and craft and these were a great inspiration for my designs. The ancient old Japanese lanterns or ‘Chochin’ were a great source of inspiration when creating my Berry lamp. They are skilfully made from paper or silk, with a wooden or bamboo frame. I wanted to create something based on centuries old traditions but add it into something new and play with light and shadows and their reflections.
My Berry lamp is a homage to this age old tradition that still functions as a beautiful and delicate piece of functional art to this day. My goal was to emulate this by using mainly natural materials and crafting it completely by hand. The result is featherlight (also in weight) but solid and strong as a rock.
When the light is turned on rays of lights and the reflections of the balls create a diffused and intriguing pattern and when off the Berry Lamp is a sculpted piece of Art.
It is a work of art, but functional and, as a reference to the origin of “Chochin,” rays of light radiate through and from below like it is levitating above the floor, while still delicately tied to the floor by three spider legs or on a handmade marble foot.
